Ask Your Insurance Agent for Forgiveness

Several insurers are test-driving "accident forgiveness" programs that keep an accident from raising your rates, even if you're at fault. Most require a clear driving record of at least three years prior to the accident. With some insurers, there's no charge for forgiveness, but it applies to the first accident only after the specified eligibility time frame.

More Ways to Save

  • Miles equal money? Many insurers are implementing “pay-as-you-drive” plans outfitting cars with on-board systems that track driving time and mileage. Mileage is transmitted via a secure wireless device and factors into your premium rate.
  • Rave about your car? Brag about your vehicle's safety features, such as anti–lock brakes, anti–theft devices, and automatic seat belts. Even though your agent runs the vehicle's identification number (VIN), he may inadvertently overlook an equipped feature or two, or not know about something (like an alarm) you've recently installed.

Do your homework and ask your agent about specific discounts and programs that are available in your state..

It doesn't hurt to shop around. Often companies will try to match competitor's quotes to maintain a customer.
